Morley College offers courses in ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), Maths, English and ICT. Courses range from total beginners at the lower level up to GCSE.

Each beginner course is designed to provide individuals with a comprehensive introduction to ESOL, Maths, English and ICT along with a focus on applying those skills. Intermediate and advanced courses are for those with previous experience who want to further their skills and explore more advanced techniques. The skills that would be learnt will depend on the course and the level of the course.

Some skills that could be learnt in each essential subject include: 

ESOL

  • Produce content appropriate to the purpose 
  • Use appropriate language for a given task 
  • Structure text in a logical sequence for a purpose 
  • Use grammar, punctuation and spelling correctly 

 Maths

  • Add, subtract, divide and multiply whole numbers with and without using a calculator 
  • Compare and order decimal numbers up to three decimal places 
  • Work out fractions and percentage parts of quantities 
  • Calculate journey times using bus/rail timetables 

 English: 

  • Read a variety of texts with greater fluency and understanding 
  • Write grammatical and correctly punctuated sentences 
  • Use a range of strategies to correctly spell words linked to work, study and daily life 
  • Plan, write and proofread a range of texts, including formal letters and emails 
  • Take part in discussions and express your point of view with confidence 

 Digital: 

  • Identify different parts of a PC  
  • Set up an Internet email account  
  • Perform basic internet searches  
  • Create and save documents using MS Word 
  • Using devices and handling information  
  • Being responsible and staying safe online 
  • Online shopping safely, communicating online, including using social media  
  • Creating and editing documents

Note that Maths and English courses are free. ESOL and ICT are free if you earn less than the London Living Wage (£25,300.60 per year) or receive means-tested benefits.
