What is DevelopMentor?

  • An evidence-based programme of line management training, specifically developed for busy line managers, including those in frontline roles
  • Available free of charge to eligible line managers in London-based SMEs, worth £500 per person
  • Practical content aimed at driving immediate day-to-day change – no essays or assessment
  • See the impact: Improved staff performance, improved staff retention and improved productivity

How does the programme work?

  • Six hours of facilitated training, delivered over four 90-minute sessions – remote and face-to-face options available
  • Follow-up materials included
  • A one-hour one-to-one coaching call for every participant, supporting them to put learning into practice

Our curriculum enables line managers to boost the motivation, engagement and performance of diverse teams. Content includes: understanding motivation and engagement; inclusive management and communication; adapting leadership styles; objective setting; having difficult conversations and coaching skills for line managers.

Why train line managers?

Line managers play a crucial role in influencing how people feel about their work and how they perform and progress. This is even more important for young people and those from disadvantaged and marginalised backgrounds.

One in three people have left a job because of poor line management and half of people with ineffective managers plan to quit their job in the next year. Organisations that invest in management training see an average 32% increase in employee engagement and productivity, according to the Chartered Management Institute.

Eligibility requirements

Participants must work for a London-based SME and must line manage at least one apprentice who meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Economically disadvantaged – earning below the LLW prior to starting the apprenticeship or receiving free school meals at any point during their education
  • Is from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background
  • Is from a group under-represented in their sector, e.g. women in the construction or digital/tech sector, men in the early years or social care sectors
  • Is otherwise disadvantaged in the labour market e.g. a care leaver, disabled
